PHP upgrade — before your host does it for you
Got the "your website uses an outdated PHP version" email? We upgrade the version in a controlled way — first on a copy, then for real — so your site doesn't break mid-workday.
Why isn't a PHP upgrade just a button press?
PHP is the language your WordPress site runs on. Old versions no longer receive security patches — which is why hosts (Zone, Veebimajutus and others) send warnings and eventually raise the version themselves, without asking you.
The problem: an old theme or plugins may not survive the new PHP — and then the site is a white screen in the middle of a workday. The right order is the reverse: compatibility check and updates on a copy first, then the version bump, then verification. Your visitors never notice a thing.
The typical case: the site is 8–10 years old, the original builder is long gone, and nobody has dared to update anything. Exactly these sites need a controlled upgrade the most — every postponed year makes the jump bigger.
A controlled upgrade, step by step
- ✓Compatibility audit: theme and every plugin checked against the new PHP
- ✓Full backup before anything is touched
- ✓Upgrades rehearsed on a copy of the site first
- ✓PHP raised together with WordPress and plugin updates — targeting the newest stable version (PHP 8.3/8.4)
- ✓Replacements found for abandoned plugins and modules that block the way
- ✓Speed and function check after — newer PHP is usually faster, too
Four steps, no white screen

Full backup, then a working copy where the upgrade is rehearsed.
PHP, WordPress and plugins raised together on the copy — then, once clean, for real.
Function and speed check. Newer PHP is typically noticeably faster.
PHP upgrade pricing
Most PHP upgrades are a few hours of work at €70–110/h — we give a firm estimate after the compatibility review. Sites on our care plan don't think about this at all: version bumps happen as part of the plan.

Asked about PHP upgrades
You can — Zone, Veebimajutus and cPanel self-service panels have a version dropdown. The risk isn't the switch itself but what breaks after: check theme and plugin compatibility first and take a backup. If that sounds foreign, we do the whole process for you.
A forced upgrade is done without checking compatibility. If your theme is old, the result is often a broken site at a random moment. A controlled upgrade costs a few hours and skips the drama.
Stay calm — the cause is usually one incompatible plugin or theme. Email us what you're seeing; we diagnose first and quote honestly after, not before we know what it is.
Everything below PHP 8.1 is end-of-life today. If your site runs on 7.x or older, the question isn't whether to upgrade but how controlled the landing will be.
Usually yes — old plugin versions are exactly what breaks on new PHP. That's why we raise everything together, in the right order, on a copy first.
